Aralia Garden Design：The key brief from the clients for this garden was to create a bit of a ‘wow’ factor. They really wanted to create a garden that could be used for their upcoming ‘big’ celebration party, whilst at the same time adding value, so that any expenditure on the garden would be recouped in due course when the property was sold. It was also really important to improve the views from the property’s many windows onto the outside space. They wanted an elegant, minimalist design, with clean lines and minimal fuss. Ideally they wanted a low maintenance garden with lots of evergreen structure that would be refreshed with seasonal colour.

When the clients first moved into Viburnum Gate they barely used the garden. It wasn’t working for them and detracted from the house, so much that it meant they nearly didn’t buy it. The garden was also an odd shape, wider than it was deep, and they felt that the boundaries really dominated the space. It was neither functional nor attractive.

New bi-fold doors had been added to the end of the clients’ open plan kitchen – dining area, and this drove them to want to have a garden that would create a true indoor/outdoor experience. Their upcoming party gave them the impetus to get the space properly designed, to create a usable and attractive space that people could flow in and out of the house.

The style of the garden was informed by the client’s love for crisp clean interiors, and this was translated into a contemporary scheme which would have maximum impact when viewed from inside as well as outside. During the design process, the clients’ original suggestion of a central fireplace feature evolved into a dramatic water wall, so it could be enjoyed every day of the year.

Screening the boundaries was the key design task for the Aralia team, as they were all permanently on view, creating zero interest or intrigue. Aralia’s designers worked to make the boundaries more interesting, using a layering approach to make the garden spaces appear deeper.

Lighting was really important to the design, a key way to create an impact both for entertaining, and to make the outside space enjoyable from inside the house at night. Aralia designed a comprehensive lighting scheme for the garden which included uplighting the pleached trees, recessed lighting into the steps and paving, and submersible uplighters in the base of the water wall to uplight the central feature and the living wall strips that frame it.
